Wildlife Sanctuary

Woodstock’s new wildlife sanctuary showcases many great qualities that Australian nature has to offer. Approximately 2.5 hectares of bush-land is the now the home to some unique Australian mammals. Species include the Red Kangaroo (females and de-sexed males), and their smaller relatives, the Long Nosed Potoroo, Brush Tailed Bettong , Swamp Wallaby and the Red Necked Wallaby.

Over 20 animals enjoy roaming within the vermin proof enclosure, abundant with native shrubs and a canopy of gum trees, teeming with bird life.

The mammals mostly sleep during the day, making them difficult to spot in the tall grass and scrub. The big Red Kangaroos sometimes stand proudly, before bounding off.

The Wallabies are quite large and not as timid as the smaller Bettongs and Pottoroos, who curiously “potter” around. The smaller animals can sometimes be seen at dusk.

As more animals are rescued and offered to our care, the numbers within the Woodstock Wildlife Sanctuary will grow. Koala friendly trees are growing to encourage Koalas to stay within the area rather than occasionally dropping in and passing by. A shelter, feeding station and interpretive area is currently on the drawing board along with other building works at Woodstock.

Upon your visit to Woodstock, be sure to ask one of our friendly staff members about this recent attraction. Woodstock now offers visitors superb McLaren Vale wines and fine food plus the opportunity to observe some Australian flora and fauna in their natural environment.
