'Naughty Monte' Montepulciano 2019
There is a little rascal hiding in all of us; a sometimes naughty side. A mischievous bon vivant who loves the good times and late wild nights. This character symbolizes the nature of this Italian grape variety. Delicate red fruit aromas on the nose with a crazy savoury structure on the palate. We planted this intriguing variety at our estate in McLaren Vale in 2010.
We used traditional winemaking techniques to process the fruit, destemming into open stainless-steel open fermenters where the wine spends 5 days on skins being pumped over twice daily prior to pressing. We moved from using oak for maturation to using purely stainless steel, finding that tank maturation better accentuates distinctive varietal character, while the gradual oxidation that occurs in barrel maturation reduces vibrant varietal aromatics.
Bright crimson with a violet hue, this fresh style of Montepulciano displays lifted primary fruit aromatics of mulberry, black berry and plum with subtle herbaceous hints of rosemary. The palate of Montepulciano shows some resemblance of the nose, displaying bright red fruit acidity on the front palate, but finishes very savoury with crunchy tannins. At only 13.5% alcohol this is a Medium bodied, moreish wine with a smooth yet spicy finish. Cellar for 2 to 4 years.
Enjoy with all your Italian favourites - Antipasto, Spaghetti Puttanesca, Margherita pizza...loves tomato, herbs and spice.
