Brothers Blend GSM
BACKGROUND
Woodstock Winery is proudly in its third generation of winemakers from the Collett family. Doug began winemaking here in the early 70s, followed by his sons and grandsons. Over the decades, generations of brothers have both quarrelled and collaborated to build the winery we see today. Starting with second generation Ian, Stephan and Scott the tradition now continues with Max and Peter. The Brothers Blend GSM stands as a testament to the challenges of working with family and the compromises made for the greater good. Grenache, Shiraz, and Mataro are three contrasting grape varieties: Grenache offers a floral, perfumed, and light character; Shiraz provides dark fruit, fleshy, and bold Flavors; while Mataro brings an earthy, spicy, and mellow essence. Just like brothers, with their contrasting characters, opinions, and skill sets, these three grape varieties with their own strengths come together to achieve something very special.
WINEMAKING
Mild and moist conditions of the 2023 vintage in McLaren Vale yielded a medium-bodied Grenache with vibrant aromatics and spice, though slightly lacking in mid-palate richness and structure. Harvested in March, our 100-year-old Grenache vines were fermented dry in open vats and matured in stainless steel, preserving their delicate floral and red fruit aromas. To create a beautifully balanced wine, we blended this Grenache with oak driven old-vine Shiraz and Mataro, contributing spice and structure. Just prior to bottling, the wine was fleshed out with a subtle hint of 2024
Grenache from the same old vines, further enhancing the wines fragrant qualities.
TASTING NOTES
With over 60% Grenache, this wine showcases lighter colour, glowing with a brilliant electric crimson hue. The nose bursts with vibrant red fruit, hints of confectionery sweetness, and an alluring floral perfume. On the palate, it’s plush and soft, led by Grenache’s bright fruit, while layers of Mataro add a subtle spice. Shiraz rounds out the mid and back palate, delivering oak richness, chocolate-like complexity, and smooth, lingering tannins on the finish.
FROM THE WINEMAKER
'As Woodstock’s very first GSM, I wanted this wine to make a statement. We’re fortunate to be the caretakers of such ancient Shiraz and Grenache vines, and by blending them with a hint of our younger Mataro, we have crafted something beautiful. This first release is a fantastic expression of what’s possible, and it marks the beginning of even more exciting wines to come' - Peter Collett
