'Collett Lane' Cabernet Sauvignon
A single vineyard of Cabernet Sauvignon (Clone LC10 on Ramsey rootstock) was planted in 1988 at Woodstock Estate by Scott Collett. At first the block was referred to as the ‘Pines Block’, planted near a stand of pine trees. After felling the pines and planting native trees, the name changed to the ‘Pineless Block’. Eventually, the local council agreed to Doug Collett's wish to call the unmade road ‘Collett Lane’ , this was adopted as the final name. This block is on the same sandy ridge as ‘The Stocks’ Shiraz vineyard.
Winemaking
Traditional fermentation practices were used to ensure that colour extraction and fruit concentration are expressed in the final wine. After completion of secondary fermentation in oak, the wine was then racked and returned to oak for at least 18 months maturation. Carefully selected French and American oak barrels were used for oak ageing to guarantee structure and balance. Only the best barrels from this ‘Collett Lane’ block are selected each year for this Woodstock flagship Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Wine
This wine has a synergy between structure, tannins and fruit. The rich middle palate has generous dark fruit flavours with savoury richness of dark chocolate, fresh Cuban cigars, and spices. The lingering tannins are medium dry, balancing the lush fruit on the palate. A long refined finish makes this wine ideal with a hearty meal.
Ageing Potential
‘Collett Lane’ really comes into its own when aged in bottle. This is a wine that will reward your patient cellaring with the further development of its unique terroir characteristics. We believe fifteen to twenty years will be the sweet spot, if stored at a constant sub 20°C temperature.
Serving Suggestion
This wine would match perfectly with a Lamb Roast or a slow cooked Veal Osso Bucco. The wine will benefit from significant “breathing” time in a decanter.
